First Bike Query

Postby trevorlawrence » Mon Jan 25, 2010 7:48 am

Hi All,

First of all I apologize if this is not the right place to post my query.

OK, so I recently purchased my first bike ever. a 1999 Yamaha v-star 650. It ran fine when I got it, had a bit of extra money so I bought a few things that took me about a week to put on. (rear fender, seat, painted the tank, some of the engine covers etc..) First problem came in with the tail light. I am pretty sure i wired it correctly. but I only get a running or key power light, but no break.) My battery keeps dying, seems to be old so i will get a new one, but i brought it to cycle gear to get it charged, when i got it back, fired it and the bike started just fine, so i figure i would take it for a ride around my neighborhood. Backed out of the spot, pulled the clutch, kicked it into first gear....and it stalled. Turned it back on, and the same thing happened. Went on for about 4 times before the battery drained and it wouldn't start again. Pulled right back in. While all of this happened. I noticed, nothing on my cluster worked. I remember well connecting the speedo cable, as well as the other 2 electrical wire connections. Today I jumped it with my car(not turning the car on obvs.) It fired up, but when I try to rev it, in neutral, it shuts off.

I know its lengthy and about 800 problems, but if anyone knows what the solution might be for any of them please let me know.

Thanks,
Trevor.

Welcome to the board Trevor.

Wonder if your kickstand switch has kicked the bucket. Have you tried unplugging it to see if that solves the issue?

Sorry since I am non really all that mechanically/electrically inclined maybe someone can chime in regards to tests you can do to verify if it is the kickstand switch.

You obviously live in the Bermuda Triangle. I'd sell the bike and buy a boat. Good Luck!!

I would not buy a new battery until you get it running without an issue - continue to jump it or buy a battery charger that has a start function on it. Jerry hit the first step on the nose, it does sound like your kickstand safety switch has took a -censored-. To test this you must by pass the switch and then start the bike - clutch in, first gear and it should run fine. The 650 is a cold natured bike, it will take awhile for it to warm up - this maybe the problem with the stalling. My wife had one that took about 10 minutes warming up before it would idle and run smoothly. Hope this helps alittle - also if you are going to do most of the work on this bike, a good buy would the service manual

I had somewhat similar problem and I tried to jump the kickstand but that didn't work.I think it might be an indicator problem.I think the relay doesn't work because although when you are bypassing the kickstand the current doesn't go passed the Burnt relay and hence the problem still exist and the motorcycle won't start.
