Race Bike Query

Hi All,

A friend of mine work in a salvage motorcycle dealers in the UK and as such have access to various wierd and wonderful machines and parts.
Following a brief look at carclassic.com he found the yamaha france yzf750, which got him thinking about a new project, based around a budget damaged repairable yzf refurbed and tricked up along the lines of that bike, but on a budget, not a blank cheque.

Can anybody give advice as to what sets an 'SP' apart from the normal 'R' model. Does the chassis plate say it is a yzf750sp rather than yzf750r?

Also, with reference to the race bikes, does anybody know what kit parts are available or where to look for them? Are they still obtainable from Yamaha direct or is it an Ebay lottery item?

With regard to engine tuning, what sort of spec did the race bikes run? And has anybody got information on what modifications the bike responds well to?

Also, if anybody can point in the right direction of any specialist sites for yzf 750's, it would be much appreciated

Yamaha's YZF750SP was made from 93-97.

The first 2 years (93-94) the difference between the "R" was:FRP 1 piece solo seat,Keihin FCR39mm Flat-slide carbs,Air Scoop on top of radiator,Endurance windscreen (lower frontal area),Needle thrust bearings,TPS sensors in throttle and gear,Fully ADJ front suspension (93 "R" forks = preload only,Fully ADJ Rear Shock w/stiffer spring (very harsh ride compared to R's softer shock),Close-Ratio racing transmission,Different suspension linkage,Michelin TX11/23 Hi Sport tyres (vs Bridgestone BT50's on R model)

From 95-97, Yamaha also added to the SP:Ohlins shock w/remote preload adjuster,Adj swingarm pivot,Bolt on sub-frame (more forward position),Slightly revised fairing panels.
