When the weather gets cooler as it does in the Northern United States, you have a few options. You can continue to ride and brave the cold, or you can winterize your bike. Here are a few tips from MetricCruisers.com on winterizing your bike.
Check the bike for any mechanical issues that may have arisen over the riding season:
This is a good time to get out the lift, and go over the details of your ride. You can combine this process with a good cleaning to remove any of the leftover road grime that may be hiding on the underside of your bike. Don't forget to put on a good coat of wax to keep any moisture from attacking.
Change the Fluids:
Take the time to change the Oil, Oil filter, Differential if applicable.
Check the Battery:
Check that you have no leaks
Clean the terminals and case
Disconnect and place your battery on a trickle charger
Prepare the fuel system:
Fill your tank and add a gasoline stabilizer. This will help prevent tank corrosion and provide for a better starting bike in the spring. Don't forget to follow the instructions on the stabilizer.
Properly Store your bike:
Place a cover on your bike.
Keep it in a warm garage when possible, hey you wouldn't want to be left out in the cold...
Put your bike on a lift, this will help prevent flat spots in your tires.
If you store your bike not in your home, you may want to be certain to take any legal documents home with you. This will help in the event your bike is stolen or damaged while being stored.
Following these simple steps can make the spring time much easier for you. Keep this in mind when you decide it is time to store your ride.
